Bicycle rider committed to road safety

“Riding a bicycle is the summit of human endeavour – an almost neutral environmental effect coupled with the ability to travel substantial distances without disturbing anybody. The bike is the perfect marriage of technology and human energy.  —   Jeremy Corbyn

My neighbor Frank owns a bicycle shop and teaches bicycle safety at many outdoor farmer’s markets on the weekends during the summer months.

He demonstrated some of the main concerns to check to ensure the smooth operation of your bike on the road.

His more daunting concerns are those uncaring motorists who fail to pay heed to riders on the road.

Checking out your vehicle is an important part of bike safety.

Observing the rules of the road and cycle maintenance is a major part of cycle safety.

Paying attention to road conditions and pedestrians another. — gc

  1. I know of far too many bicyclists who have been injured — some seriously — by drivers who seemed oblivious or who were in too much of a hurry to get wherever it was they were going to “pay heed” to those on bicycles.

Even my daughter, who was on her bike, was hit by a driver who wanted to get to a parking space so badly that she didn’t bother to notice that my daughter was in her path.

Fortunately, my daughter sustained only minor injuries. It could have been much worse.

    • I am thankful that your daughter was not seriously injured. Many times drivers backing out of parking places in malls don’t check for pedestrians and merely place the vehicle in reverse. Many times I have had to jump out of the way of impatient motorists who did not check for pedestrians but were busily engaged in conversations on their cell phones. There should be heavier fines for such drivers.

  2. My wife and I rode a tandem bicycle for 15 years. There’s nothing quite like it for building a relationship. We cycled to Grand Canyon, across Missouri. My wife was my stoker, photographer, communicator (a ham radio operator), and navigator. The bicycle is the most efficient machine invented by mankind. It required seven times as much energy to walk the same distance as it does to cycle.

  3. In my country if a cyclist can stretch out his or her arm and touch your vehicle, you are driving too close to the bike and risk prosecution! It appears not to take in to consideration the length of one’s outstretched arm!
