“Ping Pong” diplomacy denies reality

“Golf appeals to the idiot in us and the child. Just how childlike golf players become is proven by their frequent inability to count past five.”  —   John Updike.

President Donald Trump meets with the president of China , Xi Jinping, on Thursday and Friday of this week in Palm Beach Florida ,  attracting more international media attention that local leaders expect to deliver a long-term tourism boost

Jinping’s credential’s are impressive. He is the current General Secretary of the Communist Party of CHina, President of the People’s Republic of CHina and Chairman of the Central Military Commission.

The talk may be about trade wars and human rights violations, but the images broadcast around the world will show Palm Beach County’s blue skies, beaches and lush golf courses.

And therein lays the irony. The Chinese Communist Party in October 2016 banned all 88 million of its members from joining golf clubs, in its latest update of party discipline rules.

The new rule on golf states that members are banned from “obtaining, holding or using membership cards for gyms, clubs, golf clubs, or various other types of consumer cards, or entering private clubs”.

If caught, members could either receive a warning or be removed from the party, depending on the severity of the violation.

Golf clubs are often seen by the Chinese public as places where officials cut “shady deals”.

Extravagant eating and drinking, and abuse of power, are also formally banned, said Xinhua news agency.

With this information in mind and appreciating the fact that Mr T. and his motley crew of dilettante wannabee politicians are striving for public acceptance and appreciation for all their efforts I wonder how the president of China will react when Trump asks him to play a round or two of golf.

Perhaps it as an oversight on the White House’s part to ignore this official Chinese ruling about golf clubs or maybe the president , who has slighted every other foreign dignitary by his arrogance and unconcern for others , had planned this to humiliate yet another foreign leader.

Remember Donald: you should have been (fore)warned about this cultural gaffe.  —  gc

  1. It wouldn’t surprise me if he gave him a set of golf clubs, made in China!
